Contemporary Luxury Outdoor Living – Paradise Valley, Az

How Clients Got The ‘WOW’ With Republic West Remodeling.

A Paradise Valley couple had already renovated the interior of their home using Republic West Remodeling, featuring a modern, contemporary design aesthetic. While they were thrilled with the result, it became apparent that their backyard was outdated, and did not reflect the overall approach taken with the house.

“We didn’t realize the size and usage we had with our backyard,” the couple said. “It was obscured by a wall that had an inserted fireplace. And there were rocks and foliage behind there that were not being used.”

“We approached Jim Wiseman, General Manager at Republic West,” they continued, “with the understanding that we would only engage them this time if they could come up with something for the backyard that would blow us away. The question was, could they create a vision of what we had imagined?”

Republic West Remodeling brought in their designer, Jacque Richardson, who worked with the couple very closely over the ensuing months. Together, they arrived at a design that included all the ‘WOW’ factor one could wish for, and one which was the perfect complement to the house.

“The goal was to complement the recently remodeled contemporary interior of the home; to have the designs spill out to the backyard, and to add an additional fabulous resort-style atmosphere,” Jacque said. “The idea was to exceed our clients’ expectations by creating an environment that they have only dreamed about, with a stunning outdoor living space that extends the interior living to a fabulous outdoor experience with several individual areas of entertainment for everyone.”

BEFORE

The Epitome Of The Ultimate In Arizona Indoor/Outdoor Living.

Some features included an infinity pool, a professional basketball hoop, a ping pong area and plenty of room to simply spend quality time with their guests. The plans also included a full outdoor kitchen that had the feeling of an interior experience. They featured all-new countertops, refrigerator, dishwasher, ice maker, sink and plenty of cabinet storage space.

According to the couple, “This is really the epitome of the ultimate in Arizona indoor/outdoor living.”

“The two of us are huge sports fans,” said the couple. “We have one TV outside and we wanted to build a wall where we could put a second TV for the other side of the yard.”

To bring it all together, the plans were to add a roof that would give them access to lighting, heating, and a stereo system on demand.

After Jacque completed the overall layout of the new backyard design, Interior Designer Kathy Molnar helped select the finishes that would complete both the new design and the inside.

This included tile and pebble tech for the pool, pavers for the backyard, countertop material for the kitchen, and a feature wall in the kitchen.

“That turned out to be my favorite feature,” Kathy said. “It’s not an average tile or stone backsplash. We found these very beautiful slabs with an unusual pattern, but instead of just using them as a full slab on the back wall, I designed a pattern that took advantage of the natural movement in the stone. It turned out beautifully. And it was certainly great that the couple was open to some of these more unusual ideas. They were great partners in every aspect of the design.”

The Couple Was Surprised At How Much Wasted Space Could Be Put To Good Use.

“This project was fascinating to construct as it had so many moving parts, “said Jim.

“The demo was massive but straightforward,” said Jim. “The entire yard was removed, including the existing pool, creating just a flat dirt yard. From there, layouts were done to ensure everything would fit in the space per the rendering concepts.”

The couple was delighted as the work progressed. “Once the backyard was gutted and leveled, and building commenced, we were surprised at how much wasted space could now be put to good use.”

“The early stages of the pool construction were next,” Jim continued, “getting it to the point where it was complete short of all the finish work, such as tile, etc.” Then began the underground work as there was to be water, lighting and landscaping throughout the entire yard. All of this work needed to incorporate the AV capabilities as well.”

The basketball hoop in the pool had its own set of challenges. Because it is an infinity-edge pool, the distance where this hoop could be installed was farther away from the pool’s edge than the basketball hoop allowed.

“We had to get a custom extension piece made to make it work,” Jim said.

The couple had many other good things to say about the project. “The construction of the outdoor kitchen was remarkable. The design features a lid that is cantilevered off the back wall so there are no posts or any other obstruction when you enter the outdoor kitchen. The kitchen is complete with high end outdoor cabinets and appliances, Dekton countertops and granite backsplash. It has a sink, a water filtration system, disposal, a dishwasher, an ice maker, three refrigerators and two different barbecue grills. The lid itself incorporates lighting, heaters, speakers and a mister system.”

Finish work included all the landscaping, lighting, ground rock and AV work, as well as the installation of two fire pits. One of the fire pits was custom-made to go with a custom bench area made of Dekton.

Due to good planning, there was plenty of room for the fireplace – a concrete fire pit made in California that was customized precisely to the property. “We spent a lot of time with Kathy,” the couple said, “considering our options, and we finally settled on this one.” The upshot is an area that serves as its own entertainment center, with a bench and chairs for their guests, and the warmth of a crackling fire.

The technical nature of this install was incredible and complex. The install alone took about 4 days.

The degree of attention to detail and fine craftsmanship Republic West put into the effort was remarkable, but it all started with the conception of the design based on the couple’s preferences. They first began discussing the project in August of 2018, and broke ground a year later.

The couple was very gratified with the way things turned out, largely due to their initial vision, and the way Republic West worked with them to actualize it. As the couple said, “If you look at the final renderings and you sit in this back yard, it is almost scary how identical they are.”

When asked how they enjoyed their collaboration with Republic West, the couple underscored their commitment to excellence. “Not only do we think Republic West’s workmanship is terrific. The approach, the mindset and the culture of Republic West rises to our standards. Nothing is too hard to do. You know there are going to be mistakes. You know on a project of this scope, something could go wrong. But our comfort level is that when we go to bed at night, we know Republic West will make it right.”
