Living Room Renovation Tips

Some homeowners use their living room to relax at the end of a busy day. Others use it as a comfortable place to entertain friends, play with the kids, or even work from home.

Whether your living room space is on the smaller side or quite ample, it is worth it to look at the room in terms of sections before a renovation. This task may be as simple as arranging furniture in a cluster around a fireplace or TV screen for entertaining, using a room divider that acts as storage to hide a desk or toy area, or creating a cozy reading nook.

Establish A Focal Point in Your Living Room

If your goal is to make your living room area inviting and comfortable, a focal point is crucial. For example, a fireplace can act as an anchor around which how you utilize the rest of the room’s space.

If you live in a neighborhood with scenic views, you may want to turn it into the focal point by arranging seating around a large window or sliding door. A large, meaningful piece of art, a favorite family picture, or unique, textured wallpaper works well, too.

Think Seating

With a living room renovation, you will also want to think about how you arrange the furniture. Ensuring you have enough seating is important. Along with a larger-size couch, think about featuring “occasional” seating, such as ottomans, poufs, or built-in window seats.

If you like to entertain guests, it makes sense to arrange living room seating around a coffee table to create a more social feel.  Make sure the furniture you select is in proportion to the size of the living room. For instance, small couches or sofas in large rooms can make a space feel cavernous, while chunky, larger pieces may feel more intrusive in compact spaces. Remember to think about furniture height, as well.

Love Your Lighting

When planning a living room renovation, make sure to incorporate a variety of lighting types, such as floor and table lamps, wall lights, or recessed lighting, with dimmers, to provide pockets of light throughout the space. Focus on particular aspects you want to highlight: picture lights or even an area above the fireplace can add to the interest of the room.
